Illuminating about the period in which it was set and quite tense in places as the folklore of the Essex serpent grips the community in different ways. It is not fantasy fiction and but I would happily recommend it.

"London, 1893. When Cora Seaborne's controlling husband dies, she steps into her new life as a widow with as much relief as sadness. Along with her son Francis - a curious, obsessive boy - she leaves town for Essex, in the hope that fresh air and open space will provide refuge. On arrival, rumours reach them that the mythical Essex Serpent, once said to roam the marshes claiming lives, has returned to the coastal parish of Aldwinter. Cora, a keen amateur naturalist with no patience for superstition, is enthralled, convinced that what the local people think is a magical beast may be a yet-undiscovered species. As she sets out on its trail, she is introduced to William Ransome, Aldwinter's vicar, who is also deeply suspicious of the rumours, but thinks they are a distraction from true faith. As he tries to calm his parishioners, Will and Cora strike up an intense relationship, and although they agree on absolutely nothing, they find themselves at once drawn together and torn apart, affecting each other in ways that surprise them both. The Essex Serpent is a celebration of love, and the many different shapes it can take."
Book Description from the Guardian Book Shop

I really enjoyed Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. I read this through some of the hottest days in January when activity seemed impossible. A really gripping end of the world science fiction.

A writer of dazzling genius and imaginative vision, Neal Stephenson combines science, philosophy, technology, psychology, and literature in a magnificent work of speculative fiction that offers a portrait of a future that is both extraordinary and eerily recognizable." -Goodreads

Currently I am re-reading an old favourite, as I can dip in and out of it when I need a bit of down-time from multiple projects. Here's a review I put up on Goodreads. P.s this is fantasy fiction!

ON MAPS AND MERMAIDS

A recent re-read, and in-between my first teenage reading in 1996 there have been many other repeat readings. 'Lines upon the skin' is an absolute favourite of mine, a book I turn to for a comfort read and I have even become a little fond of the cover, which had initially put me off (when I was 17) with its pastel painted frolicking mermaids. The most recent release with the map and compass is much more appealing. I enjoy all the cartography details and plot wise it's a perfect reason for the group to be travelling rather than the 'ideal quest' trope, it seems much more everyday and is much more relatable as a teenager and also to my adult self.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY

In the world of 'Lines upon the skin' the female pronoun is used as the norm which was a surprise to me as a 90's teen but I think it very quickly created a different world, one I really wanted to be in. In fact like Nicola says very well in her review, that this is a culture where one's sexuality and race are points of interest rather than the basis for discrimination. Tirayi is not a perfect world, there is war and slavery in some parts BUT there is equal opportunity in gender and race whether you want to be a Cartographer, Ruler, Soldier or Evil priest.

ADVENTURE AND ROMANCE

As a teenager I was so envious of Ashil and her friends, cartography sounded like the perfect job, traveling around the world, meeting new people and visiting fascinating places but perhaps the maths and geometry aspect would have not really been my cup of tea. There is plenty of action, a little philosophical discussion, character development, and enough friendship and love for an engaging story.

My older self is much more critical of some of the writing and plot but I still love to read it.

Patreon rewards for February

The desktop wall paper reward for all my Patrons this month is a digital collage of botanical prints and a mermaid silhouette. Wow! Well, I didn't see that coming.

HOWEVER... this smart little box of magic (aka the GoPro) is making me feel rather inept. I usually pick up new apps/technology pretty quickly but with a very minimalist 'instruction' booklet I had to chase up some tubes videos just to find out where the charge socket was hidden...

I have recently spent some time with it and I'm glad to say there has been some progress. I loved the prickliness of the beginning which upsets our readerly expectations right from the start. Novik references plenty of folk lore and fairy tale elements while weaving her own tale of determination and resourcefulness. I particularly liked the contrast of class and agency between the characters.

September was 'Fae month' for book club and I re-read 2 Tamlin favourites: Tam Lin
by Pamela Dean & Thomas the Rhymer by Ellen Kushner.

Another book I was dying to read was Leife Shallcross'debut novelThe Beast's Heart.

A Beauty & the Beast retelling, imagining the tale from the Beast's point of view. I read it in one sitting (I may have got up briefly for a cup of tea).

Circe by Madeline Miller was on the reading list for the 'Myth and Mythic Adaptation' online course that I participated in through July/August. We discussed Circe live (starting at 4.am in my timezone) which was fun. I found the character of Circe to be sympathetic and her world came alive for me. The imagery was particularly lush and the end of the tale was satisfying.

I recently listened to the The Guardian Books podcast "Feminist fairytales with Jessie Burton and Kiran Millwood Hargrave" and now I have 2 more books for my to be read pile.

TBR List

Uprooted by Naomi Novik (a re-read for bookclub)

The Restless Girls by Jessie Burton

The Way Past Winter by Kiran Millwood Hargrave

A Skinful of Shadows by Frances Hardinge

Currently Reading

Twice Upon a Time: Women Writers and the History of the Fairy Tale by Elizabeth Wanning Harries

Recent Reads

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

Circe by Madeline Miller

The Beast's Heart by Leife Shallcross

Tam Lin by Pamela Dean

Thomas the Rhymer by Ellen Kushner

Cunning & Cleverness

I'm graphics editor for the Australian Fairy Tale Society ezine and Issue 07 is out (at last)! Icarus yes, Pasiphae also and Ariadne but not Daedalus.

After reading about the Minotaur and the Labyrinth, of Icarus' flight and Queen Pasiphae's passion, I started to wonder about Daedalus.

Daedalus was a maker, a master craftsman who designed the most famous Labyrinth of all time. He had a son called Icarus who fell to his death while flying one of his dad's creations and rumour has it that a nephew called Perdix was 'accidentally' pushed off the Acropolis (but handily turned into a Partridge by Minerva) because he threatened to show up Daedalus in the ingenuity stakes.

I titled the print 'The Daedalus Myth', to suggest that the 'myth' of Daedalus, of genius handyman who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time was a little off and to wonder perhaps if there was an underlying narrative that wanted to punish a particular kind of creativity.

Later on I found an article that confirmed my suspicions, Riemer A. Faber states that

"...Daedalus is depicted as an inventor who transgresses the law of nature and so attempts to emulate the gods, Perdix is a discoverer who remains within the boundary of human ability"*

So my lesson is clear, the Greek Gods are ALWAYS jealous and protective of their domain, so don't even think about it!

I had a lot of fun exploring these mythologies further and poking holes in the stories. One of the things I looked at was the distance between Crete and Icaria, for someone flapping on a construct of wood and feathers it's quite impressive. Oddly this google map was a turning point... it indicated to me at least, that Icarus' death was more a punishment to Daedalus than Icarus for flying too close to the sun.

*Faber, Riemer. "Daedalus, Icarus, and the Fall of Perdix: Continuity and Allusion in Metamorphoses 8.183-259." Hermes126, no. 1 (1998): 80-89. http://www.jstor.org/stable/4477235.

BLUE

Áine: Midwinter Moon is in a themed group show called BLUEon display at the Corner Store Gallery in Orange. The first attempt was delayed one weekend when I had a printing overload at office works pre AFTS conference and the next involved the car breaking down a mere few km's away from the gallery. Unfortunately we spent the next 3 hours waiting for the NRMA to help us out of a tight spot and the next morning was rather tense as we tried to get the car fixed before going to the gallery. I ended up doing a makeshift fix on the turbo pipe hose clip until we could get home to Canberra.

So enough about almost getting there! Eventually, just a few days before the exhibition closed I had a ticket and I was through the door. Why was I so desperate to see only 6 tapestries? As the AGNSW catalogue states "Created around 1500,
The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries have been the subject of literary inspiration, scholarly speculation and wonder ever since."
The imagery of these tapestries has been with me for so long that it is hard to know where I would have first seen it. As a teenagerI loved the idea of medieval romance (much Camelot inspired reading) and I adored the costumes and fantastic beats. This was the late 90's so I would have seen imagery mainly in books and magazines... not so much Pinterest. I couldn't not see the real thing!

It was a wonderful experience, enhanced by the exhibition format and displays. To be able to get up close and understand the true scale and sequence was fantastic. The exhibition was dimly lit and rather full, so I only made a few sketches. In one moment a young couple stood in front of 'My Sole Desire' tweaking a memory of what I thought was a short story. I managed to get a quick scribble of the pair before they moved on.

One mental image that has stuck with me for 20 or so years is a short 'segue' in Isobelle Carmody'sDarkfall book 1 of the 'The Legendsong Series'... not a short story after all!

In this little interlude 2 street kids visit the Musée De Cluny to get out of the cold after someone gives them free tickets. The attendant in the room sees himself as the defender and protector of the tapestries and can't bear that the 'grubby young couple' get to look at such loveliness. This section has stayed with me because it is so sad.. beauty, vulnerability, hope and loneliness thread through their visit before the watcher moves on.

So I decided to mash together my sketch and my imagining of text in Carmody's book. However the young couple I sketched seemed to be enjoying themselves and the attendant on that day I visited was a delightful Yorkshire gent... nothing like the man in Carmody's novel.

Gardens of Good & Evil

'Gardens of Good & Evil: Growing life Plucking Death' is this year's theme for the annual Australian Fairy Tale Society conference.
